Quick answer

A fracture is a broken bone. Simple, well-aligned breaks often heal in a cast or brace; displaced, unstable or joint-line fractures usually need surgery — plates, screws or a rod — to hold the bone in the right position while it unites. Early, correct fixation means straighter healing and earlier movement.

The basics

What counts as a fracture?

A fracture is any break in a bone — from a hairline crack to a bone that has broken into several pieces or come through the skin (an open fracture). What matters is not just that the bone is broken, but whether the pieces are in a good position and whether the break is stable.

When the alignment is good and the break is stable, a plaster cast or brace lets it heal on its own. When the bone is out of place, unstable, or runs into a joint, it usually needs surgical fixation to hold it correctly — otherwise it can heal crooked, short, or stiff. The right call is made from your X-ray, the injury and your daily life.

One roof, one team

A serious accident needs more than one specialist — Medifirst has them together

Major trauma is rarely just one broken bone. At Medifirst Hospital the emergency, ICU, neurosurgery and orthopaedic teams work under one roof, so a poly-trauma patient is stabilised and treated without being shifted from hospital to hospital. Dr. Vishal leads the orthopaedic repair — bones, pelvis and joints.

When to be seen quickly

Signs a break needs urgent care

A fracture is not always obvious. See an orthopaedic surgeon quickly if you notice any of these after an injury.

Head, brain, chest or spine injury? Treat it as an emergency first.

If an accident involves a head or brain injury, loss of consciousness, a chest injury, or numbness or weakness in the limbs, that is a medical emergency and must come first. At Medifirst these are handled immediately by the emergency, ICU and neurosurgery team, and Dr. Vishal repairs the bone, joint and pelvic injuries alongside them. Do not wait and do not rely on WhatsApp — reach an emergency department now.

Cast or surgery?

Does every fracture need an operation?

Without surgery
  • Simple, well-aligned breaks that are stable
  • Many wrist, collarbone and small-bone fractures
  • Some cracks in children, which remodel with growth
  • Cases where a cast or brace holds the position safely
  • Fractures where surgery adds more risk than benefit
When surgery is needed
  • The bone is displaced or badly out of line
  • The break is unstable or in several pieces
  • It runs into a joint surface and must be exact
  • An open fracture, or one with nerve/vessel risk
  • Early movement matters — hip, thigh and leg fractures
Not every fracture needs surgery — and Dr. Vishal will tell you honestly when a cast is enough. When fixation is genuinely needed, he explains why, shows you the X-ray, and aims to get you moving as early and safely as possible.

The approach

How Dr. Vishal treats a fracture

Care starts with pain relief, a proper X-ray (a CT for complex joints) and a clear plan. Stable breaks are set and protected in a well-moulded cast or brace, and reviewed so the position holds as swelling settles.

When surgery is needed, the bone is fixed with plates, screws or an intramedullary rod using trusted implants and, where suitable, minimally-invasive technique. The goal is a bone that heals straight and a joint that starts moving early — so stiffness and long-term weakness are avoided.

No jargon, no pressure

See your fracture on the X-ray before any decision

Dr. Vishal walks you through your own X-ray or MRI, shows you exactly what's going on, and lays out every option — surgery and non-surgery — so the decision stays yours.

  • You see your own scan — pointed out in plain language, not medical jargon.
  • Every option on the table — surgery, physiotherapy, medication or simply waiting and watching.
  • You make the final call — no pressure, and never a rushed decision.
What to expect

Healing, stage by stage

Bone healing takes weeks — this is the usual path, though it varies with the bone and the injury.

1
Week 0–1
Set & settle

Pain and swelling are controlled; the fracture is set in a cast or fixed in surgery, and protected.

2
Week 2–6
Early movement

Guided movement of nearby joints begins to prevent stiffness, with weight-bearing as advised.

3
Week 6–12
Bone unites

X-rays show the bone joining; support is reduced and load is increased step by step.

4
3–6 months
Back to strength

Most fractures are solidly healed; strength and full activity return with physiotherapy.

Open thigh-bone fracture · limb saved

"My thigh bone fractured and the bone had come out. Doctors in Daltonganj said it couldn't be saved. Dr. Vishal treated me at Medifirst — 3–4 surgeries — and today, 15 days after stitch removal, I am walking on my own leg. He is like a god to me."

"My brother had a leg fracture. Another hospital kept him in ICU for a week and was running up unnecessary bills. Dr. Vishal read the reports, explained there was no abdomen or head injury, operated on the fracture — and 10 days later my brother is comfortable. His advice is genuine."

Frequently asked

Trauma & fractures — your questions

How long does a broken bone take to heal?
Most fractures unite in about 6–12 weeks, though smaller bones heal faster and larger or complex breaks take longer. Full strength returns over a few months with guided physiotherapy.
Do I always need surgery for a fracture?
No. Many fractures heal perfectly in a cast or brace. Surgery is advised only when the bone is displaced, unstable, involves a joint, or when early movement is important. Dr. Vishal tells you honestly which applies to you.
Should the plates or rods be removed later?
Usually implants can stay for life and cause no problem. Removal is considered only if an implant is troublesome or in certain younger patients — it is a planned, separate decision, never automatic.
I was told I need ICU and multiple bills — is that necessary?
Not always. Many injuries are over-treated. Dr. Vishal reads the reports, examines you, and gives a straight opinion on what is genuinely needed — a second opinion is always worthwhile.
What should I do right after an injury?
Keep the limb still and supported, avoid eating or drinking in case surgery is needed, and get an X-ray quickly. For an open wound or a deformed, pulseless limb, treat it as an emergency.
Is it covered by Ayushman Bharat or insurance — and what will it cost?
Ayushman Bharat, cashless insurance and other health schemes are accepted where applicable. The cost depends on the injury and any implant needed, and the team gives a clear estimate up front — message on WhatsApp with your reports.
What if the accident also caused a head, brain or spine injury?
Then that comes first — it is an emergency. At Medifirst the emergency, ICU and neurosurgery team treat the head, brain or spinal-cord injury immediately, and Dr. Vishal repairs the fractures, pelvis and joints alongside them, often in the same admission — so a poly-trauma patient is treated under one roof, not shifted between hospitals.
