Quick answer

Spine surgery relieves pressure on a trapped nerve or stabilises an unstable spine — for a slip (herniated) disc, sciatica, canal stenosis or a fracture. It is considered only when leg pain, weakness or numbness persists despite proper non-surgical care, or when there are warning signs. Most patients never need it, and when they do, modern keyhole and micro techniques mean less cutting and a quicker recovery.

The basics

What does spine surgery treat?

The spine is a stack of bones (vertebrae) cushioned by discs, with the spinal cord and nerves running through a canal. When a disc bulges and presses a nerve (slip disc), the canal narrows (stenosis), or a bone slips or breaks, the result is back pain and pain, numbness or weakness travelling down a leg (sciatica).

Spine surgery is not one operation but a family of them — from a small discectomy to free a pinched nerve, to a decompression for stenosis, to a fusion for an unstable or slipped vertebra. The aim is precise: take the pressure off the nerve and steady the spine, while protecting everything around it.

Signs the spine may need surgery

Back pain alone is rarely a reason to operate. Surgery is weighed when nerve symptoms persist despite good non-surgical care — or when there are red flags.

No pressure

Do you actually need surgery?

Without surgery
  • Physiotherapy and a guided exercise programme
  • Medication and activity change for a flare
  • Posture, ergonomics and weight management
  • A targeted injection where appropriate
  • Watchful review — most slip discs settle with time
When surgery is needed
  • Leg pain, weakness or numbness that will not settle
  • An MRI clearly explains the symptoms
  • Non-surgical care has honestly been tried and failed
  • Walking distance is shrinking from canal stenosis
  • Red flags — progressive weakness or bladder/bowel change (urgent)
Dr. Vishal treats surgery as the last step, not the first. Most back and disc pain is managed without an operation. He shows you your own MRI, explains whether the nerve is truly trapped, and only recommends surgery when it is genuinely the best option — so the decision stays yours.

The approach

How Dr. Vishal approaches the spine

It starts with a careful neurological examination and your MRI reviewed with you, matching the scan to your actual symptoms — because a scan finding without matching pain rarely needs surgery. The least-invasive route that solves the problem is chosen first.

When surgery is needed, it is done with micro and keyhole techniques and nerve monitoring, removing only what traps the nerve and preserving the rest. Fusion is used only where the spine is truly unstable. Most patients are up and walking within a day and go home on a clear recovery plan.

No jargon, no pressure

See what is pressing the nerve before deciding

Dr. Vishal walks you through your own X-ray or MRI, shows you exactly what's going on, and lays out every option — surgery and non-surgery — so the decision stays yours.

  • You see your own scan — pointed out in plain language, not medical jargon.
  • Every option on the table — surgery, physiotherapy, medication or simply waiting and watching.
  • You make the final call — no pressure, and never a rushed decision.
What to expect

Your recovery, step by step

Recovery depends on the procedure, but this is the typical path after an uncomplicated decompression or discectomy.

1
Day 1
Up & walking

Most patients stand and walk the same or next day, with the leg pain often eased right away.

2
Week 1–2
Home & light activity

Gentle walking builds daily; heavy bending and lifting are protected while it heals.

3
Week 4–6
Back to routine

Desk work and daily life return, guided by a graded physiotherapy plan for the core and back.

4
~3 months
Strength returns

Most patients are back to comfortable, active life with a stronger, better-supported spine.

Frequently asked

Spine surgery — your questions

Will spine surgery leave me paralysed or in a wheelchair?
This is the fear that stops people getting help, but modern spine surgery is precise and nerve-protecting, done with monitoring to keep the nerves safe. For the right patient it relieves the leg pain that was disabling them. Dr. Vishal explains the real risks for your case honestly, without scare stories.
Can my slip disc heal without surgery?
Very often, yes. Most herniated discs settle over weeks with physiotherapy, medication and time, and Dr. Vishal will tell you if yours is one of them. Surgery is reserved for nerve pain that will not settle, real weakness, or red-flag signs.
What is the difference between a discectomy and a fusion?
A discectomy simply removes the small piece of disc pressing on a nerve and keeps the spine mobile. A fusion joins two vertebrae to steady a spine that is unstable or slipping. Most nerve-pain surgery is a decompression or discectomy, not a fusion — Dr. Vishal uses fusion only when it is truly needed.
How soon will I walk after spine surgery?
After a decompression or discectomy, most patients are up and walking the same or next day, often with the leg pain gone immediately. Heavier activity returns gradually over a few weeks on a guided plan.
I have back pain but no leg pain — do I need an operation?
Usually not. Back pain without nerve symptoms is rarely a surgical problem and is managed with physiotherapy, posture and activity. An operation is weighed only when a nerve is genuinely trapped or the spine is unstable.
Is it covered by Ayushman Bharat or insurance — and what will it cost?
Ayushman Bharat, cashless insurance and other schemes are accepted where applicable. The exact cost depends on the procedure and your health needs, with a clear written estimate before anything is decided — message on WhatsApp.
