Quick answer

Sciatica is pain that shoots from the lower back down the leg, usually because a slipped (herniated) disc is pressing on a nerve. It sounds alarming, but the great majority settles with the right medication, physiotherapy and time — surgery is needed in only a small number of cases.

The basics

What is sciatica & a slip disc?

Between the bones of your spine sit soft discs that act as cushions. When a disc bulges or "slips" (a herniated disc), it can press on a nerve root — and the pain travels along that nerve, down the buttock and leg. That shooting leg pain is what we call sciatica, often with tingling or numbness.

The reassuring truth: a slipped disc usually shrinks and settles on its own. Most sciatica improves over a few weeks with the right care, and the nerve recovers — which is why surgery is almost never the first step.

Signs your sciatica needs attention

Most sciatica eases in a few weeks. See a specialist sooner if these are true — and treat the last two as an emergency.

No pressure

Do you actually need surgery?

Without surgery
  • A short course of the right medication
  • Guided physiotherapy & core-strengthening
  • Posture, activity & ergonomic changes
  • A targeted nerve-root injection for the right cases
  • Time — most slipped discs settle in weeks
When surgery is needed
  • A nerve pinched with real, progressive weakness
  • Sciatica that is severe and not settling with proper care
  • An MRI showing a disc that matches your symptoms
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control (an emergency)
  • Conservative care has genuinely been tried and failed
Sciatica is treated conservatively first — surgery is a last resort, not a first offer. Dr. Vishal reviews your MRI with you, explains exactly what is pressing on the nerve, and recommends an operation only when it will clearly help.

The approach

How Dr. Vishal treats it

Care starts with a careful examination and, when needed, an MRI to see exactly which disc and nerve are involved. Most patients simply need the correct medication, a short rest from aggravating activity, and a structured physiotherapy plan — and the sciatica settles as the disc recovers.

When a nerve is genuinely compressed and not recovering, a targeted injection or, in selected cases, minimally invasive surgery can relieve the pressure through a small incision, with less pain and a faster recovery than open surgery. The goal is always the least intervention that gets you back to normal life.

No jargon, no pressure

See exactly which nerve the disc is pressing

Dr. Vishal walks you through your own X-ray or MRI, shows you exactly what's going on, and lays out every option — surgery and non-surgery — so the decision stays yours.

  • You see your own scan — pointed out in plain language, not medical jargon.
  • Every option on the table — surgery, physiotherapy, medication or simply waiting and watching.
  • You make the final call — no pressure, and never a rushed decision.
What to expect

Getting back to normal

For most sciatica and slip disc, recovery is steady and non-surgical — this is the usual path.

1
Week 1–2
Calm the pain

Medication and relative rest settle the acute pain; gentle movement is encouraged, not full bed rest.

2
Week 2–6
Move & strengthen

Guided physiotherapy rebuilds core and back strength; most sciatica eases over this period.

3
Week 6–12
Back to routine

Normal work, walking and daily activity return, with posture and lifting technique corrected.

4
Ongoing
Stay strong

Simple exercises and habits keep the spine healthy and cut the chance of it coming back.

"My brother had a leg fracture. Another hospital kept him in ICU for a week and was running up unnecessary bills. Dr. Vishal read the reports, explained there was no abdomen or head injury, operated on the fracture — and 10 days later my brother is comfortable. His advice is genuine."

Frequently asked

Sciatica & slip disc — your questions

Will my slipped disc heal without surgery?
Usually, yes. Most herniated discs shrink and settle over weeks, and the sciatica eases as the nerve recovers — with medication, physiotherapy and time. Surgery is reserved for a nerve under real, progressive pressure or when good conservative care has failed.
Do I need an MRI for sciatica?
Not always at first. For simple, recent sciatica an MRI often isn't needed straight away. It is advised when the pain is severe, not settling, or when there are nerve symptoms like leg weakness — so treatment targets the real cause.
What red flags should I not ignore?
Leg weakness, a dragging foot, numbness around the saddle area, or loss of bladder or bowel control need urgent attention — treat the last of these as an emergency. Sudden severe pain after a fall, or with fever, should also be checked quickly.
Is bed rest good for sciatica?
No — prolonged bed rest tends to slow recovery. Staying gently active within comfort, guided by physiotherapy, usually helps the disc and nerve recover faster.
Do injections help sciatica?
In the right cases, a targeted nerve-root injection can relieve the pain and buy time for the disc to recover, sometimes avoiding surgery. Dr. Vishal advises when it will genuinely help.
Is it covered by Ayushman Bharat or insurance — and what will it cost?
Most sciatica care is non-surgical and low-cost. If an injection or procedure is needed, Ayushman Bharat, cashless insurance and other schemes are accepted where applicable, with a clear written estimate first — message on WhatsApp.
