Quick answer

Knee and hip replacement removes the damaged, arthritic joint surface and fits a metal-and-plastic implant that glides smoothly again. It is considered only when pain limits daily life and non-surgical care has stopped working — and most patients stand and take a few steps within a day or two of surgery.

The basics

What is knee & hip replacement?

In arthritis, the smooth cartilage that caps the ends of your bones slowly wears away until bone rubs on bone — which is why the joint hurts, stiffens and grinds. A joint replacement resurfaces just the worn ends with a precisely-sized implant, so the joint moves smoothly and daily life becomes comfortable again.

It can be a total replacement (both sides of the joint) or a partial replacement when only one part is worn. Modern implants are designed to last 15–20 years or more, and the goal is simple: to get you back to walking, stairs, prayer, farming and everyday life without pain.

When to consider it

Signs a replacement may be needed

One or two of these is not an emergency — but if several ring true and simpler care has failed, it is worth an honest assessment.

No pressure

Do you actually need surgery?

Without surgery
  • Weight management to unload the joint
  • Physiotherapy to strengthen supporting muscles
  • Anti-inflammatory medication, used correctly
  • Injections (steroid / lubricant) for the right cases
  • Activity & footwear changes
When surgery is needed
  • The joint is truly bone-on-bone on X-ray
  • Pain limits sleep, work or independence
  • A deformity (bow / knock leg) is worsening
  • Non-surgical care has genuinely been tried and failed
  • You want a durable, long-term solution
Dr. Vishal recommends replacement only when the joint is truly worn out and simpler steps have been exhausted. He shows you your own X-ray and explains it in plain language, so the decision stays yours — never rushed.

The approach

How Dr. Vishal performs it

Every replacement starts with a careful examination and your X-ray reviewed with you, so the plan fits your joint, your age and your life — not a template. Implant size and alignment are planned in advance.

Surgery is usually done under spinal anaesthesia (you are awake but feel no pain during surgery), with tissue-sparing technique and trusted global implants. Most patients are helped to stand and take steps on day one, and go home on a clear, guided physiotherapy plan.

No jargon, no pressure

See your worn joint before you decide on a replacement

Dr. Vishal walks you through your own X-ray or MRI, shows you exactly what's going on, and lays out every option — surgery and non-surgery — so the decision stays yours.

  • You see your own scan — pointed out in plain language, not medical jargon.
  • Every option on the table — surgery, physiotherapy, medication or simply waiting and watching.
  • You make the final call — no pressure, and never a rushed decision.

Hip pain · the right diagnosis

"I had ongoing pain in my left hip joint, but the X-ray was normal so no one could find the cause. Dr. Vishal explained the difference between a nerve problem and a bone problem, and examined it properly. I'm much better now, and the problem is nearly gone."

Frequently asked

Knee & hip replacement — your questions

How long does a replacement last?
With modern implants and normal use, most knee and hip replacements last 15–20 years or more. Staying active, keeping to a healthy weight and following the physiotherapy plan all help it last longer.
Will the surgery be painful — am I awake?
It is usually done under spinal anaesthesia, so you are awake but feel no pain during surgery. Afterwards, pain is well controlled and most patients are surprised how manageable it is.
When can I walk and climb stairs again?
Most patients stand and take supported steps within a day or two. Walking indoors improves over the first two weeks, and stairs and a light routine usually return by about 4–6 weeks.
Can both knees be replaced together?
In selected fit patients, yes — both can be done in one sitting. Dr. Vishal will advise whether one-at-a-time or both-together is safer for you.
Do I really need surgery, or can it wait?
Many joints are managed for years without surgery. Replacement is advised only when the joint is truly worn out and daily life is limited — Dr. Vishal tells you honestly either way.
What are the risks of a joint replacement?
Modern joint replacement is very safe, but like any surgery it carries small risks — infection, blood clots, or implant wear over many years. These are uncommon; Dr. Vishal screens for them beforehand and takes clear steps to keep you safe.
Am I too old for a replacement — is it safe with diabetes or BP?
Age alone is rarely a barrier — many patients in their 70s and 80s do very well. Diabetes, blood pressure and heart conditions are checked and optimised before surgery, and Dr. Vishal tells you honestly whether it is safe for you.
Is it covered by Ayushman Bharat or insurance — and what will it cost?
Ayushman Bharat, cashless insurance and other health schemes are accepted where applicable. The exact cost depends on the implant and your health needs, and the team gives a clear written estimate before anything is decided — just message on WhatsApp.
Will I be able to sit on the floor, squat and pray again?
That is the goal. Most patients return to walking, stairs, farming and daily prayer comfortably; deep squatting and floor-sitting improve steadily with recovery. Dr. Vishal guides what is safe for your knee and your implant.
